Water horses are very sensitive, affectionate horses. These horses love a good grooming but can be reactive to firmer brushes or quicker movements. They tend to be very good at "looking after their riders." They can be reactive but usually their reactions are short lived and followed by a decision about how to deal with whatever caused the reaction. Water horses do have good focus, however they can be flexible about how they reach their goal and are less likely to become blocked. They tend to "leak out" of leg or rein aids to avoid misunderstood requests. These are the horses who are most likely to go around an obstacle such as a barrel, jump or water rather than going over or through it.
These horses are commonly referred to as "over-reactive", "evasive", "gentle", "kind" or "big hearted." They are easy to misunderstand, but if they are understood properly, Water horses are very trainable because they have such a strong desire to please. If you remain aware of their sensitivity and don't over-ask for things, they will be more than willing to accommodate desired manoeuvers. If they do not do what you're asking, it is either because they did not understand what you wanted or because you asked too strongly and have caused them fear.
Water horses tend to hold in their emotions (in order to please their rider/handler) for as long as they can and then will let them out all at once when they are no longer able to contain them, much like a dam breaking. It's important to recognize when your horse is holding back emotions and to encourage them to move or release the built up tension.
Understanding how Water horses think, react and learn will help you understand how and why they do what they do. Remember, this is only one part of your horse so don't forget to get to know the other qualities as well and remember that your personal element will also play a part in your interactions.
Water in the rider can mean softness and compassion for the horse but can also be weakness and lack of clarity, leaving the horse feeling un-led. The energy is down and back. This type of rider goes well with Fire or Wind horses.
