Water   *    Wind   *     Ground    *     FIre

When it comes to learning Horsemanship, it can be pretty confusing, complicated and challanging.  By using, teaching and understanding the four natural energies of water, wind, ground and fire, horsemanship can become crystal clear.

*Just like people, horses are individuals with intricate personalities.  This perspective is a guideline and meant to be used as a helpful tool in understanding yourself and your horse and not as a way to excuse difficult behavior or a way to label your horse.*

Within all of us, horse or human, each of the four energies or elements is present.  Some of us are well balanced with a little of each energy, and others have one particular element that seems to take us over, dictating how we will react or deal with certain situations.  It is helpful to understand what the dominant element or elements are in you and your horse in order to effectively communicate and understand each other.

We should strive to develop the energies that are weak bringing balance to our lives and our horses' lives.

Having a balance of all four elements as well as knowing how and when to use or shift between each element will help us face, avoid or resolve conflict, navigate unforeseen obstacles, focus on a goal or duty, or help us to think logically in the midst of a chaotic challenge with grace and dignaty.

Read through the following descriptions and click on the one that best describes your horse.  You will then be taken to a page that gives a more detailed description of the way this type of horse may act, feel, react, learn and speak.

Affectionate, Caring, Strong-willed, Trusting, Honest, Willing, Gentle

Bold, Strong, Focused, Determined, Serious, Goal/Results Oriented

Slow, Steady, Reliable, A "Thinker", Protective, Decisive, Stubborn

Playful, Curious, Quick to React, Spirited, Outgoing, Impatient

*Choose the description that BEST describes your horse MOST days.  Remember, I said that there will be a little of each of these in everyone so if it looks like it could be one of two, choose the one that is most like you or your horse more often.*

These ideas and theories regarding the natural elements have been around for centuries in such ancient arts as Tai Chi and Feng Shui. It is in no way new but in my opinion it is definitely under-rated.  This perspective on the Elements has been adapted from the work of Linda-Ann Bowling of Unbridling Human Potential and  Dr. Stuart Heller of www.cultivatingexcellence.com    Visit Linda-Ann's website for another Equine-ality™ assessment!
